David Gespass is a lawyer in Birmingham, Alabama. His current practice is devoted primarily to representing victims of police misconduct and to prisoners’ rights. He is a past president of the National Lawyers Guild, the country’s oldest and largest national human rights bar association. He was editor-in-chief of the NLG Review (formerly the Guild Practitioner), the Guild’s intellectual journal, and remains a member of the editorial board. He has, for the past decade, been part of the planning committee for the Southern Human Rights Organizers Conference, held in even-numbered years over the weekend closest to December 10, the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
