The Langum Travel to Collections Initiative

This initiative is designed to help defray the travel and living expenses of scholars who wish to use the Langum Family Papers or the de Mattos Family Papers, both of which are located at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (formerly the Illinois State Historical Library) in Springfield, Illinois.

The Langum Papers and the de Mattos Papers are catalogued under the OCLC/First Search database, Worldcat. The Library began accessioning these papers to provide insight into a multi-generational professional family with many ties to Illinois. However, the Library’s catalogue and Worldcat’s listings are not complete. For example, Langum’s recent donation of his personal diaries (1951-1952, 1988-2020) and travel journals (1961-2020) are not yet listed. However, the papers now processed include at least those on the following guides:

Applications are processed throughout the year, and there is no deadline. The applicant should send a resume or c.v., a letter about the research project and how these collections would be of aid in the project, and a summary budget for the proposed grant. The maximum grant is $1,500. Send applications to:

Other Papers: (1) The San Jose State University Library’s Special Collections Department has accessioned a portion of David J. Langum, Sr.’s legal files from his law practice in San Jose, California, 1968-1978. (2) The archives of the Langum Foundation are deposited with the Department of Archives and Manuscripts, Birmingham Public Library, Birmingham, Alabama.
